The Trail of the Lonesome Pine has been recorded numerous times, probably most notably by Laurel and Hardy, and was featured in their 1937 film Way Out West. The chorus is: In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, On the trail of the lonesome pine- In the pale moonshine our hearts entwine, Where she carved her name and I carved mine Oh, June, like the mountains I'm blue- Like the pine I am lonesome for you, In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, On the trail of the lonesome pine. Inspired by the John Fox, Jr.'s 1908 novel of the same title, the song expresses the singer's love for his "girl" June, who lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Famous quotes containing the words pine, trail and/or lonesome: When the chopper would praise a pine, he will commonly tell you that the one he cut was so big that a yoke of oxen stood on its stump as if that were what the pine had grown for, to become the footstool of oxen.
